Inthecourseoftheinvestigation,MartinandSagadevelopacloseworkingrelationship,althoughtheyareverydifferentpeople.Martinhasatwenty-yearoldsonfromhisfirstmarriage,August,whoisnowlivingwithMartinandhiscurrentwife,Mette,bywhomMartinhasthreechildrenafterMartinhashadavasectomy,Mettediscoversthatsheisexpectingtwins.Sagalivesaloneanddoesnotseemtofeelsheneedsaseriousrelationship,insteadpickingupmeninbarsforcasualsex.SheappearstohavesymptomsconsistentwithAspergersyndrome,resultingindifficultyestablishingrelationshipsandfeelingsofinadequacyinmanagingpeoplesherefusesapromotionforthislatterreason. Afterthekillerhasmurderedseveralpeopleandsuccessfullythrownredherringsinthewayoftheinvestigation,histruepurpose-tostrikeatMartinhimself-eventuallybecomesclear.Jens,nowcallinghimselfSebastianSandstrod,firstapproachesMette,whoissusceptibletohisadvances,afterlearningthatMartinhassleptwithCharlotteSöringer,awomanwhoisperipherallyinvolvedintheinvestigation.SebastianluresMetteandherchildrentoaremotespotwherehesubjectsthemtoaterrifyingordeal,lockingtheminwitharoomandgivingherahandgrenadewithitspinremovedtoholdaslongasshecan.However,SagarealisesthatAugustistherealtarget.Theinvestigationculminatesinaconfrontationonthebridge,whereshecannothelpbuttellMartinwhathappenedtoAugustandhastofireathiminordertopreventhimdestroyinghiscareerbykillingSebastian,thekiller'sfinalintention.
